Jeff Young's New TR8 Motor

Jeff had a new long block built that will allow him to run a fuel injection setup for the TR8. We've been spending all the spare weekends converting everything over for the new motor - wiring, FI system, etc. Big project for the off season, I think we're probably easily 60-80 hours into it and still not done....but, it is looking good!

Nice! :) It'll be interesting to see what sort of power this makes... at the very least, morning starts will be a bunch easier ;)

It will probably make bankruptcy class power.

Can't thank Dr. Earp enough for the work on the car. Have overcome a lot of issues via his good thinking.

Jeff - good luck with the project. looks great so far.

and I promise not to look at it in person until after the race...

Hey, you cheaten' bastard!! That thing has four extra cylinders!!!!!

Ya didn't think anyone would notice???

:p

That settles it... I'm taking the motor out of my Titan and dropping into the Z! 8 cylinders for everyone!!!!!

Only if you "Jeff it up." :)

He's got that covered on this project!

The garage has been Jeff'ed up for about five weeks now. We managed to clean it a bit over the last few days and it does look better, much better. You can now walk around in there without fear of injury and Ed the Dog doesn't get trapped in nooks and crannies from which he cannot escape.

Pretty exciting project and a lot of work. I wish I had the ability to run some sort of FI, I'm jealous with these old boat anchor carbs!

Parrish, you know you can get a $7000 turbo kit for the Titan motor. It will make over 600 hp. That will tow that new trailer.

... adding fuel injection to a carbed car... now that's a fascinating concept! taking advantage of the change in rules are we? :p nice

i wonder how many folk will do this to their cars?

Not many can -- check the Spec line, I'm one of the few cars that came with carbs and FI (Bosch L-Jetronic). 300/400 TR8s came with FI at the end of the run in 1981, plus all of them sold in California.

Still a beeyatch collecting all the necessary parts.....plenums and intakes aren't hard to find but all the other stuff (throttles and injectors, etc.) have been somewhat difficult.

Remember the Fiat? That puppy 2 was offered with either injection or a carb. Not to mention different size head bolts for each of the heads. I'm probably off a mm or two, but I seem to remember the X1/9 came with either a 13mm or 11mm head bolts on the FI head along. that made it a real PITA if you spun a bearing or warped a head (both of which happened on my car). You had to make sure you matched up your good head to the new block or new head to the old block.... which is how I learned that the motor came with 11mm studs... I was left running the last race with a plown gasket because the head slipped!

I don't know what the Carbed car had.

Anyway, it will be nice to see your reliability improve. Is the new system Bosch or something Brit?

Nope, just EGT gauges. Relics from the carb era, but I will keep them.

Cameron is handling the O2 sensors, which will be further downstream in the collectors, where they were stock.
