a really bad idea

I'm talking about the 219 hp US version that was not in GT. Less stock hp than the 3.0 BMWs, the 300ZX, the Supra, etc. etc. etc.

That's not the downer about it, the downer is I even considered this. Doesn't say much for my thought processes..........

Hey Jeff,

I'm not really up on the 928 so I went to wiki and found this:

219hp '78-'79
229hp '80-'82
239hp '83-'84
288hp '85-'86
316hp '87-'91 (S4)
326hp '89-'91 (GT)
345hp '92-'95

So it looks like 219hp only gets you the first couple of years, your '80 already has 229hp. Looks like the '84 is about as new as can be classed. Also note that the 4.7 makes about 295hp in the rest of the world, so the S motor in the '83 and later cars would probably blow the class away if they were allowed in. Then you're left with only the 4.5l cars of '78-'82 only, with the weight set for 229hp. Sounds about like a 3300lbs to me, right about the curb weight of the car.

I think with the weakening economy, someone building a 928 race car may be just what we need to help ward off the recesssion!

Seriously, I think the car will be loads of fun, I'd do it if I wasn't broke!

Just as much as the BL guys would agree to call the TR8 a British Camaro.

K

No, the TR8 is more the British Mustang. A little more compact, with odd packaging.

So, Jeff, I bet if you get that car your FIL (oops! ) will love you forever!

Pulled the trigger yet?

The TR8 is the British Cosworth Vega, in reverse. Crap Brit car, decent American motor = TR8. Crap American car, decent Brit motor = Cosworth Vega!

If FIL is father in law we gots a long ways to go before that ever happens, but that car will be sitting in Asheville for years I am sure, unless I grab it. Cool car, about 10 years ago I drove it across the state and it cruised at 90 mph like no other car I have ever driven. Not that big either. I liked it.

Ok, lets look at this objectively...

1) You race a TR8. Neat, fun, green, fast, but how many trips to post race impound has it made?
2) You bought the fiber glassed tube framed death trap of a CanAm Lola for enduro's... nice!
3) You sold the reliable, easy to maintain, competetive, but "common" Spec Miata
4) You have a really sweet Lotus that would make an excellent race car, reliable, sexy, you name it! :smilie_pokal: and now, now you want to go build an expensive, oddball porsche that few (i can't ever remember any IMSA versions) people race in this hemisphere?

Jeff, you know finishing the race is more fun than just taking the start (I know... remember the Fiat? )... I tell ya what... let me find you a nice Integra? :D

Actually, for some reason, it all makes sense!

hoop

Hoop, your post is logical, rational and makes sense. But what is objective about Racing!? LOL....besides Miatas suck.

I won't do this, I won't. It'd be dumb. But damn that car would sound good.

You've got to keep up the mantra of all owners of odd ball race cars:

"But it's a really cool car, but it's a really cool car, but it's a really cool car"

Follow those words and you can talk yourself into ANYTHING!!

(OK, so a Saturn isn't that cool.......)

well, I actually have a 915 box in my 911E, but with an upgraded 2.7 motor in RS trim, and it's just peachy, actually!

I can't tell you how cool my Fiat X1/9 was... those 3 cylinders sounded spectacular under the bridge at Nelson Ledge's and VIR... just one problem... in the only race it finished was it was running off the starter in the pit lane crossing so it could cross the line after the checkered flag!

But it was really cool!

hoop

oh yeah, I didn't forget... the block has 4 pistons.

I'm a little late to the thread, but go find mark kibort on the 928 section of rennlist and he'll tell what a great racecar the 928 is. I don't believe him ;)

The 928 is a nightmare to work on! I've had my 81' US 5-speed for 7 years and have replaced just about everything and it's only at 65,000 miles. These cars don't sit well for long periods of time and if you find one cheap be prepared to sink a fortune into it just to get it started. Throw the stock brakes in the garbage and run something better, but legal. IIRC I spent about $500 just on gaskets to rebuild the top end. The cars only worth 3k if that.

Thats why I run a rabbit. Cheap, easy, and fun.
