DUMB Toyota question

I should probably kick myself a few times before and after asking this question, but I don't have a factory manual, and I would like to verify this before tearing a friend's car apart. My buddy has a 2000 Celica GT, and was told that the spark plugs were under the motor. I just took a quick look at the car, and the engine has a nice flat plastic cover (held in place by four small nuts) over the top of the engine with only one hole where the oil filler cap is located. If I were a betting man, I would say that the spark plugs were on top of the engine under the nice plastic shield (just like just about every other car, with or without the shield). Am I correct or can someone correct me. BTW a dealer quoted him $500 for changing the plugs.

Thanks
