Very interesting! Now I'm curious to hear what the discussion is like on the prod site. What is that site?

I red letttered the classes that aren't nationally recognized. These classes have no rules consistency across the nation, so, by that count, the top 24 stops at the blue line

What about ITE? Shouldn't it be red?

Unless I misunderstand how the numbers are calculated ... there have been many more races where national classes are eligible than regional classes (since national classes are available at most regional races, but not vice-versa).

It would be more interesting to rank these in terms of cars/race (where the denominator for any given class is the number of races where that class was offered.) This should move the regional-only classes up a good ways.

Both good points.

The thread adress is:
http://prodracing.com/prodcar/viewtopic.ph...der=asc&start=0

Josh is correct, the actual participation numbers used to decide things like Runoffs attendance are average based. For example, a class must maintain a 2.5 car average to remain a National class. (with some other provisions)

What will be interesting is to see if the National office stands by their commitment to only have 24 classes racing for a national championship or if they will waffle and sumbit to outside influences.

If they do stick to their guns (doubtful), then the future will be interesting as all those owners, drivers, and car prep guys who are no longer eligible for a national championship, are punted into the regional ranks with IT. I know more than a few national drivers that will scream like Marie Antionette with a cake in her mouth and a blade on her neck. <_<

Does anyone know how many regional races and how many national races fall into the tally that was posted on the Prod site? I'd ask over there but don't have an account.

I'll do the quick math about averages with that answer. It won't really be right due to the existence of restricted regionals, and it can only take into account nationally-defined classes, but it'll be an interesting approximation nonetheless.

Josh, I didn't do a good job of transfering info but these are the National totals through May 2007. The last number on the right is the total car count for each class.

SMT is the SFR 'SM' class; T stands for spec Toyo, or spec tire

It should be included in SM counts, withe any true SFR 'SM' car removed (no tire rule)

ITE should be split at the 3 liter mark, then BP, DP, and RS could then be added in. Also, all the tube-frame BP cars should go to GT. Tub-chassis cars should be in IT(O/U), not tube frame look-a-likes. I take it some regions split ITE and others, like So-Pac and Nor-Pac, don't.

As Marty alludes to, ITE can't really be included since while the name may be the same in different regions, the rules vary. It's not appropriate to count all of those cars as being in the same class.

I know that ITE is all over the map as far as rules go. The fact remains that the numbers given in the Prod-car thread are for elimination of national/regional distinction, then all classes become run-off eligeble. In essence ITE will be eliminated as it now stands, in its place will be something else. I figure that BP and DP will absorb the ITE cars with a certain amount of rules change and/or vehicle change.
