R side restraint system

Why, I can answer. With a winged seat, you don't want your noggin to stretch out, then snap back on the outside of the wings. Without a winged seat, it's a good idea to contain lateral movement of your head.

Thanks Kirk, but the "why" I was looking for was that if someone had reserched a particular brand/style what made it better than the rest.

That being said I already knew you had a keen sense for the obvious ;) .
 
I too have been looking for one on an off for a while. I was told awhile ago the it was the single best cheapest safety item i could add but they are hard to find. the WC cars use them and I have seen the label "safety solutions" but I have not found a vender for them.

I'm saving this decision until everything else is back in the new shell because I have a sense that, unline a window net, a right-side net with a winged seat like my Recaro is going to be a VERY individual piece. Location is likely to be pretty critical, as is shape, so I've frankly been thinking that the best answer would be to make a custom one.

Of course, that will all get shot to hell by the inevitable SFI requirement, that will make it necessary for us to all have the same net that doesn't fit any of our cars.

p.s., not sure how to attach it "legally" but i am planning to add a cross bar between the "A" pillar bars over the dash. the windshield is shot and it will be easier to do with it out. that bar could be where the tip of the "triangle" on the side net goes.

no tom they have to be larger. i had figured a 36" to reach from the cage to the dash bar if I remember right. but I think I saw in the fastrack that they should wrap around the seat and attach to the main hoop. and yes more webbing, they have to catch both your shoulder and helmet. if they only snag one that is bad.
 
I am using a Cobra Evolution seat, so the wings are substatial.

After reading the reccomendation in the new fasttrack I tought I would try to find any avaiable product that could be installed as described in the bulletin. All I have found so far is the "sprint car" style .

this seller has other styles but not sure the cost diff. / savings is worth it compared to the new ones at summit, etc.

i am assuming that since these are optional, the SFI rating expiration would not be applicable?

also, not sure how to mount since the photos in one of the posts does not look like it would reach most cross bars.

just a bit of an update for this thread, another thread here had a reference to the World Challenge rules.

and if you go to the last page of this PDF file, you will see the schematic for a right side net.

it looks like they want the lower edge of the net to be level with your shoulder.

For the price of the kit I am considering one, but it wont be done till after my school. I made enough changes to the car this winter to adjust to.
 
Now whats your dash point connected to? my cage does not have a dash bar, the previous owner was too tall and a bar there was too close to his knees.

In my case it was part of the firewall. Due to the geometries of the car I mounted it to bolt in shear to the under horizontal surface of the battery tray. I backed it with large washers on each side.

Yes mounting to a dash bar would be better, but this spot worked very well. What you can't see in the picture is that the net is not parallel to the driver. It in fact angles outward and the forward mount is on the left side of the passenger area. The reason for this was mostly to ensure plenty of clearance to the shift lever. I did not want the net to interfere with my shift motion.

What I did was to mount to rear roll hoop, cross brace, and haress bar structure in the rear. Then sat in the car and move the forward point to where it seemed to be close to the driver yet leaves space for he shifter.

Interstingly the rear mounts to the cage are slightly behind the edge of the driver. This means the net sort of wraps around the seat a bit.

The goal of this net is limit upper body lateral motion in case of a side impact. I also tested it some by moving sideways in my seat to figure how much of my upper body and head it would catch.


Once the end points were mounted I cranked it tight with supplied racthing strap.
