Fuel Injector Removal
Id like to know the right way to remove the fuel injectors on my A2 CIS-E. Im sure they have never been out before, and I feel like Im going to ruin them.

Although the angle is awkward, you just pull them straight out. There is a small tool you can find that is just a right angle bracket with a slot cut to catch a lip on the injector, but mostly people use a BFS (large screwdriver). They should pop out of the manifold iwth light/moderate force.
You won't hurt the injector, but the injector seals may need to be replaced as they're probably dried out and cracked. They're just little rubber o-rings that slip over the injectors.

Just assume that you will replace the o-rings and have them on hand in advance. Clean the be-jeebers out of the holes and area around the injectors before you pull them, too...

And, you might as well replace the phenolic inserts as well. They crack and leak air.
I'd suggest you bite the bullet and go down to your local NAPA (or equivalant) and get the injector removal tools. The L-clip that grabs the injector by the base keeps you from damaging the steel-braided line (you really don't want to be pulling on that) and the injector seat removal tool makes that job a snap. These tools are not expensive and they're handy to have around:

Clean the heck out of everything, remove the injectors the proper way, replace the injector seats and o-rings, and you'll assure yourself that the system will run much better.

And while you've got them out......
Send them out to RC Engineering to be cleaned and flowed. Costs about $25-$30/injector.
They do a great job. When I converted to Prod, my injectors had 100K-200K miles and the flows were all over the place with poor spray pattern and two dripped. After cleaning and flowing, the were dead even with excellent spray pattern and no dripping.
Worth the money IMHO (They look like new when they are done) and alot cheaper than new injectors. Turn around is about 1 week.

AND......
If you do send them out to get cleaned/balanced, do NOT take your time putting them back in. When they get back to you, get them installed and start the car up.
Apparently the stuff they use to clean the injectors gums up a bit if it sits...leading to the injector sticking open and leaking raw fuel into the cylinder.

Definitely get the tool. I've seen people break off the top of the injector while attempting removal with just a screw driver. This is even more likely with old hardened seals, IMHO. Once broken, the manifold and/or head had to be pulled to extract the bottom half of the injector...

Or just take them to the local diesel mechanic who will do it for 1/3 the price.
