Some of the earlier gearboxes had externally adjustable detents. I know for a fact that these detents can keep you from shifting into 5th if incorrectly adjusted, and 4th might also be possible. The externally adjustable detents usually have plastic covers and are located directly on top of the box (over the shiter rail). I can't explain why, but occasionally these go out of adjustment all by themselves. Later boxes just had fixed length bolts that are not really adjustable. Check the Bentley (-'84) for more details. It's probably worth a try before pulling the box.
