Brake Caliper Swap

Am I allowed to replace the two-line calipers on my car with single line calpiers from a later year of the same model. They have exactly the same mounts and use the same rotors and pads. As long as I am replumbing the lines and replacing the calipers, I would like to make things a little simpler if possible. I would appretiate your opinions.

The pertinent rule says that you can swap "assemblies" among cars on a given spec line. The question is whether the caliper alone is an "assembly."

For example, it's commonly held that you can take the entire FI system off of one RX7 (2nd gen) and replace it with another - but you can't just swap injectors...

I THINK that I've seen the standard set that says that the entire brake system is an assembly. If all of the other parts are identical - and only the calipers are different P/Ns - then it's a non-issue probably.

Correct me if I am wrong:

I don't see that car even listed in the ITCS.

The 242's are in ITB and are specified as the 1975 2.0 or the 1976-1981 2.1 versions.

The only Volvo listed in those years are the 1983-1985 240 2.3's.

Asuming you have a 240, the 1988 version is not on the same spec line and therefor would NOT be legal.

...at which point DragonRacing17 is going to ask, "Who came up with this stupid set of rules?"

The ITCS gets assembled piece-meal, rather than from any big-perspective point of view. If nobody specifically asked for your car make/model/year to be listed, it isn't - even if it is exactly the same as those that are. You're going to want to look VERY closely at the book, figure out if you need to make any classification requests, do the paperwork, and then make your preparation decisions.

It's a goofy system but it's all we have.

The car is a Volvo 200 series, 240 means it has a 4-cylinder engine (2.3L), and 242 means it is the 2-door model. So it is classified in the ITCS under 1983-85 Volvo 240. But you have clarified my question about the legality of the caliper swap, I will just stick with the stock 2-line calipers.
Thanks
