We're looking at doing some ignition mods to our 1st gen 12a to get that last ounce of HP/torque out of it, or blow it up trying!

According to the 01 GCR (yes I know, outdated):
Any ignition system which utilizes the original distributor for spark timing and distribution is permitted. Internal distributor components and distributor cap may be substituted. Crankfire ignition systems are prohibited unless fitted as original equipment. Any spark plugs and ignition wires may be used. Ignition timing is unrestricted.

It doesn't say anything about aftermarket coils, so are these free? "Internal distributor components and distributor cap may be substituted"... doesn't that leave it open for modified caps and "air" rotors? I've seen multiple MSD direct fire setups... so these are legal???

Just trying to see what my options are.

It seems that ignition topics are few and far between on this IT board... maybe the topic is taboo and I'm poking a hornets nest with a stick!
