    Default Got my HANS recertified

    Just an FYI to let you all know my experiences with it, since there's been so much concern.

    I bought an old used HANS, '03 vintage (so carbon fiber), in good shape. Upgraded it with new sliding tethers when I bought it. Since it's so old, no FIA or SFI sticker - predates the specs.

    Because it was so old and third-hand, I was a bit nervous sending it in - but of course had no real choice in the matter. So I just filled out the form and sent it in.

    $15 plus return shipping, I have the shiny foil sticker. Still no FIA sticker, but there ya have it. It'll be a long time before that $50 or so (with shipping) equals the cost to get a new FIA model... LOL Who knows, I might need a new one by then.

    On the plus side, despite threats to the contrary, they didn't replace either the padding or no-slip yoke material (which would've been added cost).

    I had the same experience; very efficient (my hans was even older and a bit beat but had newer tethers).

    Does SCCA actually require H&N devices to be re-certified? The "clarification" that came out right after SFI dropped the re-certification bomb kinda made it sound like they might not.

    Just trying to understand...

    He actually got his HANS certified, not 'recertified': "Since it's so old, no FIA or SFI sticker - predates the specs."

    Kirk is simply pointing out that it's mighty interesting to "certify" production and safety of something to a spec that didn't exist when the device was manufactured.

    Interesting times...

    Ok. I'm just trying to determine if my 2 year old Defnder has 3 years of eligibility left or is good indefinitely.

    Fortunately agencies focused on legitimately protecting the public safety like the FAA don't let that happen. You would never catch me on a commercial aircraft if they employed the same level of standards as SFI.

    right now the answer is indefinitely. if/when SCCA decides to enforce the expiration, then the Defnders will all need to be recertified or shelved.

    Yeah, good point - I sent it in to get stickers, not have old ones replaced.

    Just to stoke the fire a little...

    I understand that there are multiple places to send your HANS in to get it "re-certified" with most shops not being "manufactuers."

    Really? Can you provide the contact of someone other than Hubbard/Downing that can do the re-certification?

    <certificationprocess>

    Yup. It looks like a HANS. Will that be cash, check, or credit card...?

    </certificationprocess>

    EDIT - I TRULY hope that nobody finds any of this even remotely surprising...
