It's a subtle distinction but I've seen evidence that the same "chiefs" invoke different first principles to support (generally post hoc) their decisions.

"We have to require SFI head and neck restraints - it's the industry standard."

"FIA seats must have back braces - we don't care about the industry standard."

    Bingo.

It's my understanding that, unless things have changed recently, there is not an active, ongoing safety committee comprised of members who have no commercial interest in policy. It would be perfectly resonable for the Club to drop this hot potato (if that perception is the problem) in the lap of such a committee and accept its recommendation without modification. Politicians do it all the time, and delegation is not necessarily a bad thing -- in fact, it's an attribute of good management.

It may be management by committee, but at least the issue would be managed and a stable policy developed. More importantly, in the end the safety needs of the racers would probably be better served.

after thinking more about this in light of the current direction of the ITAC, SCCA's policy development seems a bit like a coral reef.

the coral reef grows and goes in somewhat random directions over time without any clear cut limits or directions. and as it grows, it gradually gets closer to the surface where passerbys become injured.

guess i have been watching too many National Geographics..........

Damit, K - you were so close to having to replace the keyboard on my laptop, either from the beverage I am consuming at the time, or from missing the table and slapping the kepboard laughing. Love the gulls - where are the buoys?

Seriously, you are spot on about the club needing some direction and consistancy when it comes to decisions. Just as another example, not safety related, why are they considering crank fired ignition and not allowing very limited plates for jacking your car up SAFELY. (I am one step closer to 'repairing' my frame rails as allowed by the rules).
