I always loved those.. recently look at a convertible one for the wife... Its a solid car, but not sure that's the ticket to go fast. OTOH, it will last forever and they are fun to drive.. (disclaimer: I work for Toyota and race a Corolla GT-S for the last 17yrs or so)
Not sure if he has any 22R experience, but check with Steve Colletti, who used to race a ITC Corolla in the NE and is / was a major Toyota-head. He might have some good insight into the potential of this engine.

Hero To The Momentum Challenged
There is no doubt that alot of R&D has been done to this engine. However most builds on them, have not been stock. These motors love cams, and head work. (l;ike every other toyota). For some reason toyotas of the 80's always had peuny camshafts. My father got me into building these for mud trucks back in the day. We were able to squeeze over 300 hp NA out of one of these and make it last (Far from IT build).
I know where you can find the answer. They will probalby try to sell you something however. They do make good parts.. just fairly expensive.
