    Default Part Number Help

I got a cylinder head with a car I bought a few years back. It is an 8 valve head but beyond that I have no idea what it fits.

I was hoping one of you VW gurus with encyclopedic memory for part numbers or one of you VW gurus who has an encyclopedia of part numbers could tell me what I have. Thanks

Part number cast into the head 056 103 373

    Thanks
    Rory

    It's not a 1.6 head.

    I think it's a 1.3 or 1.5 head (euro?)

Would have to look at some of my spares when I get home from work. Can you say if there are fuel injector holes machined in the intake ports? Also, the valve diameter in millimeters?

Did a little searching found this reference:

    http://www.dataophug.dk/index.asp?id...KKE&SearchPart=

And it translated to a cylinder head for a 1974 Passat from a 1.3 engine

If the photo upload is not to large I will send you a screen capture

    I was bored at work.........

Something you guys should understand about the VWoA parts system, is that the numbers cast into the head NEVER directly correlate to the actual part in the parts system.

    Quick primer:
    - First three digits indicate the car it *may* have been originally designed for. 111=original Beetle, 131~Super Beetle, 171 = Rabbit, etc.
    - Second three digits indicate parts group. 103=engine head, 121=cooling system, 9xx=electrical, etc. Anything ending in 98 is a kit of parts (e.g., 198=engine kit, such as gaskets).
    - Third three indicate specific part number.
    - More importantly, though, is the letter suffix(es). These are the key parts for within the parts system and make ALL the difference in the world.

So, for your casting part number 056 103 373 all that says is it's a head. You CANNOT rely on that number to give you specific application info, as that casting could have been used for any multitude of applications, possibly never even for whatever car is indicated by the 056!! Never, EVER use a casting number - whether it's engine, electrical, plastic, trim, or whatever - from a VW to nail down its original purpose.

But, if you give us more details on the head, such as better photos of intake, exhaust, and combustion chamber and cams, I'm sure this crowd can identify it.

Thanks for the info thus far. I'll get some pics and dimensions and post them soon.
