Default Fuel surge tank, legal in IT

I have the stock fuel tank in my 84 GTI with a Golf in-tank fuel pump (to mitigate fuel pickup problems) going directly to the main in-line pump.

    Still have pickup problems.

I know fuel cells often use a surge tank to solve these problems, but can I legally use one while still maintaining the stock fuel tank?

I plan to use the surge tank from an 85 Golf.

    Thanks!

Basically, you can use anysetup that came with a car that's on your spec line.

But.....you can't combine assemblies. So, if you have a 12 gal tank, without an internal surge tank, and the car you are discussing IS on the spec line, but came with a 19 gallon tank with the surge tank internal, then you can use the entire assembly, tank and surge, but you can't put the surge for the 19 into your 12 gal tank.

    Follow?

I think I have that right, others?

(Or, you can get a cel with foam and so on.)

That is the way I strictly interpret the rules as well.

No other models on my spec line than the 83-84 GTI.

Just doesn't make sense that I can put in a cell though (in a less-safe position) and use a surge tank with it, but not with my stock tank.

I know, I know, . . . rules are rules. Should have thought of this before I built up the car, eh?

I'll just live with having to run with a full tank of fuel in every event.

Let's spin it around this way - Under which rule(s) are you making the changes?

** Addition of the Golf in-tank pump

** Addition of the surge tank

    K

EDIT = Sorry - you beat me to the post...

Creative thinking from an "un-named source":

"This has been done for years. Fuel filters are "free" in IT racing, so call it a fuel filter and you're good to go."

I've actually seen 1 qt plus fuel filters used for this purpose.

I run a 2nd pump and filter on my itc rabbit. It is located in the spare tire well with a cover over the compartment. And i have run my tank dry with no problems.

** Addition of the Golf in-tank pump

    9.1.3.D.1.
    b. Any fuel pump(s)/filter(s) may be used. Pump(s) may be relocated,
but shall not be located in the driver/passenger compartment.
If a mechanical pump is replaced, a blanking plate may
be used to cover the original mounting location.

** Addition of the surge tank
    b. Any fuel pump(s)/filter(s) may be used.

But I guess I need to install a true filter and not the Golf "surge tank".

EDIT Problem solved, VW part number 533-201-511 A is labeled by VW as a filter!
