I am going to be buying a new racing seat for an ITA Nissan 240sx and wanted to get reviews and educated on the various seats available. Some of the questions I have are:

    Aluminum vs. fiberglass

Brands: Kirkey, Ultrashield, Momo, Sparco etc. etc.

How much does does the safety factor increase from the cheaper seats to the more expensive seats. I am also a Clydesdale so I am looking for a seat for someone 6'4".

    Any feedback would be appreciated.

Lots of posts out there on this. I just researched last week and decided on a Momo Start (I'm 5'11" and 180lbs). I had a 17" Kirkey intermediate oval track seat that came with my car. It did the job but I like to buy things and wanted something better. The Momo Start is an FIA seat and seems to be the best bang for the buck. I paid less than $300 shipped from LTB. It's getting installed today If price was not a consideration I would have liked a Racetech seat.

    Clydesdale?

I'm 6'-04" 235 lbs. Had an older Cobra tube frame and hated it. It was so narrow the tubes would bruise my hips, so I sold it to a skinny guy.

I now use an Ultrashield Pro, 17" IIRC. If you get an aluminum seat that's too big you can always make some foam inserts to put under the cover. If you get one that's too small you're pretty much SOL.

    Clydesdale? [/b]

Clydesdale is a division in Triathalons for men over 225 lbs. Athenas is the women's equivalent and their minimum weight is 150lbs.

Thanks for the responses. Keep them coming.

LOVE my Kirkey Intermidate Road Race set. There is a Road Race seat and there is a Intermedate also so beware.

2 other drives purchased also one in a Civic one in an Integra, working on trying to convince Yip in his Golf since he liked it so much when we did the enduro.

I love my Ultrashield Pro Road Race with Halo. Mine is a standard size, but they can make you a custom one for less than the price of a composite. The seats are well made with lightweight sections and thick aluminum reinforcements and good foam on the halo section. Before this I ran a regular ultrashield road race (no halo)...No way I can go back to racing without a halo. Some of the newer composite seats with halos look great too and the prices are not outrageous. They just weigh a little more than the aluminum seats. For my taste, nobody has been able to answer me minimum clearances needed for a composite seat to allow for flex...and the Miata is so small that really there isn't room to flex, so I prefer controlling the stiffness with a brace instead.

Not sure I understand what you mean be a 'standard size'. Ultrashield Pro seats come standard in one inch increments from 14" to 18" in either 10 or 20 degree layback. The lighter deluxe version comes in the same range, except in one-half inch increments.

The 17" width is a bit loose on me, as soon as I get more pressing things taken care of I'll make some foam inserts for under the seat cover.

I was at 260, now down to 235, but not in danger of leaving the Clydesdale ranks anytime soon.

Sorry I should have said off the shelf. Mine is a 16", used to fit me great, but I Think it's getting a bit loose on the sides.

Ultrashield does full custom as well as part custom. In other words, you can get an off-the shelf seat in most dimensions, but if you're tall you can ask for the shoulder harness holes to be moved...or you can go full custom. Be prepared to wait for your seat though, they are in high demand.

After having a Recaro, I will never use anything else. I'm not sure if they offer different widths, but it fits me like a glove (6', 175). With other seats I was constantly tugging on the belts trying to keep them tight or tighten them more. With the Recaro, I pull them once at the 1 minute mark and forget them!!

I have a Sparco Circuit. Fits like a very tight glove. I love it. The XL version is, uh, xl ;-)
