I just swapped the tranny in my Rabbit. When upshifting it is very smooth, but when downshifting it grinds from 4 to 3 and 3 to 2. I wasn't able to get up to 5th to test 5th to 4th. Would this be the syncros or something else? maybe I am overlooking something to adjust?

Usually when its the Syncros won't it also grind when upshifting?

I put Redline MTL when I swapped it.

    Thanks

Grinding from weak synchros is much more noticeable on downshifts.
It may also be caused by poor/incomplete clutch disengagement.
If it grinds when selecting reverse from neutral, it is caused by poor clutch disengagement, otherwise it's synchro time. Not too bad a job actually. Phil

I already tried the reverse from neutral, and it was fine.

Looks like I have another thing to add to the TO DO list, or should I say the MUST DO list

Also, re-check the linkage adjustment. Sometimes, the tranny has just a smidge different linkage bracket, and what worked on 1 tranny might be mis-adjusted on another.
