    What would be considered acceptable limits for oil and water temp?

    What motor? 1.6 or 1.8?

    I try to keep oil around 110 C and Water around 220 F

    That's with a 1.8 motor in my GP Wabbit.

    I keep the water at 100 or less and the mobil one doesnt care but it gets about 300f and I have never had any oil failures. Any fossil oil does care and should not be used in a racing VW,IMHO. MM

    Oil wants to be above 212*F to make sure that water boils out, and water wants to be below that. I'm old enough to remember when we ran dino oil in showroom stock VWs without coolers and saw HUGE oil temperatures without killing engines left and right, so I'm not nearly as anxious about oil temperatures - or types or brands, frankly - as some people.
