newb here, so the gcr states:

Face coverings (balaclavas) of accepted fire resistant material for
drivers with beards or mustaches. Hair protruding from beneath
a driver’s helmet shall be completely covered by fire resistant
material. As an alternative to balaclavas, a full helmet skirt
of accepted fire resistant material may be used. Double-layer
balaclavas are recommended. If balaclavas are used voluntarily,
they shall be of accepted fire resistant material.

so i have no facial hair, so i can use a helmet skirt, right? no balaclava needed?

does a fire retardant collar count as a helmet skirt?

shopping for equipment, and i want to make sure that i am getting the right stuff.

If you have no facial hair, you do not need a balaclava or a helmet skirt. But you can wear either one, or both.

The collar does not count as a helmet skirt. They are seperate pieces.

I have no facial hair, but I wear a balaclava because I can throw it in the washing machine when it gets sweaty and that saves my helmet from getting funky.

People who don't wear a balaclava (especially with an OPEN helmet!) or skirt strike me as people who wear Nomex because the rules require it - not because they actually think they might EVER be in a fire. What would you like least to have burned?

Full-face helmet, visor closed, helmet skirt on. I switched from a balaclava when I started wearing glasses and because I couldn't find a helmet without lots of goofy holes and vents (aka "stress raisers") in a size large enough to fit on my fat ol' head with a sock on.

I have a balaclava with just the two eye holes so it has the strip going down your nose. Most people might think it's over kill compared to the more open hole kind but you don't even notice the strip between your eyes. It might be a little hot but it's just more protection. Keeps the sweat out of your eyes as well. Plus all the cool F1 guys wear one and you want to be cool don't you? It's fun to put it on with your suit and walk around. My wife won't look at me with it on because it makes me look scary. Kick ass!

I use a belaclava with my full face--but only during cold events!
