The short version of the long story is I could not find anyone to bend my cage for me before the end of the year. Being a highly impatient person I resorted to the only option left. I bought the tooling needed.

In my adventures of purchasing tube I found I can get it for $3 a ft (DOM ) if I have over 100 feet. I need 60 but will buy 80. I have a friend who wants nascar bars which adds 10.. I need someone to either do a complete cage in which case we may be under $3 a ft or just want an addition. I will be willing to help since I have the bender.

Lots of the SM guys are now putting nascar bars on the pass side to enable them to gut the door and save weight..

I dont intend to keep it long term. Just until I finish my cage it will probably go back on ebay. If anyones intereted please let me know.

    Thanks

I have to add a single NASCAR door bar to my IT7 to meet the new rule. A rear diagonal from the main hoop behind the drivers head to the opposite shock tower has been discussed as well. I am located in Marietta as well and may need some tubing if I do not have enough.

It seems 8' of 1.75 x .095 was purchased from Metal Supermarket at the end of Sandy Plains Rd. for $40. If I do not need tubing I would be certainly pay for the use of your bender. Use that money to buy extra tubing and get you closer to the 100' minimum you are looking for. What diameter tooling do you have?

Right now I only have the 1.50 Die.

I usually get my metal fom them but I found that it could be sourced from the supplier for half of it.

I have the welder and notcher if you need help on that issue. I would be glad to help.

What's a die set run? If it's cheaper than having someone do the bar for me I'd buy it and you can keep it just as long as I could use it from time to time.

    like $250

Honestly it probably pays you to have robinson do it since their labor rate is $75 an hour.

Wow! I'll look into Robinson. Do you have any info on them to get me started?

Never mind, I have their website.

    Thanks,

Tom, I have a manual and hydraulic bender plus 1" to 2" dies, a chop saw, tubing notcher, mig and a tig. I used to do cages all the time but just dont have time for the big jobs anymore. We can talk at the ARRC, You dont need to pay anyone to do this work for you, You have been a big help to me this year at the track and I would be happy to repay that with some cage free cage work

Fleetcare, curious who your buying the 1.5 O.D. dom from for $3.00 per foot ?

    What wall thickness ?

    What material spec ?

Also what will a shop by you folks charge for the minimal (main hoop, side hoops, front cross tube for side hoops, main hoop diagonal, main hoop horizontal, two NASCAR side tubes each side including the six shaped floor plates) cage we can use in IT for a 1st gen RX-7 ? I am not going to do a minmal cage but would like a number for a base line to compare.

Best I can find in Wisconsin is:

    1026 dom 1.5 O.D. x .095 wall @ $4.75 per foot

    4130 dom 1.5 O.D. x .095 wall @ $4.94 per foot

    Thanks

Thanks, Tyler! I need to do this as I have already gutted the door and according to my scale saved a good bit of weight in the process. I have the tube but since I'm in the process of painting the car, adding the tube will have to wait until later.

We'll talk at the ARRC. I'll see you Wed evening when you park.

    See ya!

Last I checked, I could still buy 1.5"x.095 for around 2.65 per foot... I'd imagine it's jumped at least .40 per foot in the last couple of weeks. 1.75x.095 did.

Its from a company called Metal Supermarkets.

I already placed the order and I think it was $2.45 a foot delivered when it was all said and done including sales tax.

    Thats 1026 DOM 1.50OD x .095wall

That cage would probably go for $800-1600 depending on where and when.. Prices down here are all over the place.

There are some pics of the cage
