I suspect Steve's referring more to the amount of work, development, and expense it takes to make one fast rather than that his is for sale.

Yeah, the B13s can be made fast. Real fast, if you ask me. But, unlike cars where you can either buy them done and/or buy one then buy the parts to bolt on to the car to make them fast (e.g., Acura Integra), there's really no one out there making really good go-fast *racing-quality* parts for the B13 Nissan. Anything you want (engine, suspension, body, whatever) you'll have to pretty much fabricate yourself. Pretty much everything sold for this car is - in my opinion - glorified street ricer crap.

Budget a couple of hours this weekend, start at the following link, and read all about how over the last five years we've developed the B13 Nissan to the competitive car it almost is today. Look at all the things we bought, tried, threw away, then bought more, tried, then threw away, then finally fabricated ourselves. It's not pretty.

By the way, do not infer from the above paragraphs that I intend to lessen the efforts of those that have made the Integras the cars they are today; a lot of work has gone into those cars but today you *can* write a check and get a pack-leading Integra. Until we finish sorting these cars out that isn't really the case with the Nissan B13... - Greg

Thanks Greg. Yeah, I'm always torn between the "ready made" option and the experience of the unknown. I'm leaning toward the latter at this point. Perhaps your experience will be able to lesson the amount/magnitude of my pain if I decide to go that route.

I've got a line on a cheap donor. If that pans out, I will probably start by using it as an autocross/track day car with any imrovements made to be IT legal.

And Steve, if you decide to sell yours, I've got $20 burning a hole in my pocket

Nope, it ain't for sale. Besides, you would only have to save nickels for a year to be able to afford it.
Greg and I are polar opposites. Greg's car is a very well built and sorted car, mine is a glorified street / mid-pack Solo car. My transition from street/Solo to race car consisted of safety equipment only. I don't have coilovers, heck my rear struts are leaky! I built on a budget and have found that I still am able to run mid-pack in ITA. A nice surprise considering the money that appears to have been spent on some of the cars I have beat. Read Greg's trilogy, it's quite interesting and entertaining. There is some "support" out there in the ether, try www.sr20forum.com just steer clear of any of the sub-forums except for the motorsports related ones. NASA SE-R Cup is gaining some popularity, but the rules are pretty different than ITA.

Heck Steve, it sounds like you've built/got exactly what I'm aiming to have, leaky struts and all!

It's good to know that a "budget" built, all arounder can at least be in the ITA pack. That makes the prospect of building one all the more encouraging.

I just read the NX2000 saga. While it is enlightening and a little scary, it is also very enticing. I've always wanted to try applying my engineering/technical background to some enjoyable endeavor.

If I end up with a donor, you can be sure I'll be in touch for help and advice.

I live in Connecticut, Steve lives in the Indy area. I'll be at the ARRC this year, so feel free to find me and say hello.

Steve, on a side note, do you go to the F1 race? My wife and I will be flying into Mount Comfort airport on either Thursday or Friday and will be at the track all weekend. Staying at a friend's house in downtown (close to all the parties...) If you'll be in the area, let me know. - Greg

Rory, my goal was to get on track this season. It took me 9 months to prepare from the time I decided, so I had time to find a lot deals on pieces and parts. Biggest outlay was for the cage which I had custom built. I got a deal ($1100) from a fellow autocrosser than has been building race car cages for years and years.

Yep, I live about 6 miles north of IMS (the wife grew less than a half mile from the track). I'll probably go Saturday with friends and end up watching the race on TV in my garage as I fiddle about with the car or my son's kart (a new annual tradition apparantly). Shoot me a line at racerlinn at sbcglobal dot net and we'll exchange cell numbers.

    Rory,
If you want to get some hands-on experience with a B13 chassis, I'm working on an ITA NX2000 at my house in Sugar Hill (North Gwinnett Co.) Sunbelt is about 3 miles from my house....

    Tim,

Please email me. I'm pretty close to you and would be interested in talking about, seeing, helping with your car.
