    Default fuel tank

    Darin,

Mine is an 89 hatchback, so I'm not sure if the coupe is the same. I dont have a diagram, but I'll describe it here, and then take a few pics and email them if you want.

The tank is basically rectangular in shape. It mounts under the car beneath the spare tire well and behind the rear suspension assembly. The pickup and pump are mount about 1/4 of the distance from the right side edge. The tank is easily removed by unbolting the two retaining straps, the filler neck, and the few connection at the fuel pump/pick-up area.

It sounds as if this is very different from the S14 tank as you have described.

I hope this helps. let me kinow if you want some pics sent.

    Jim

p.s. I'm looking for a 95-96 S14 for a driver (not race car, or rice car) Any problem areas I should know about?

Jim, No problem areas to speak of other than the high milage timing chain thing. Tranny's are a little better in the newer car. If you are going for a street car look for an SE model with ABS..It will have a factory Viscous in most cases and has a nice interior and the factory 5 bolt wheel package which by the way will take a Z32 300zx brake setup as a bolt on.

The coupe tank on the S13 is the same as the hatch. I have both cars in the shop right now so I compared them. I will be dropping the tank out of my 97 after my may race to decide weather or not to go to a cell. or to take the stock one apart and fill it with foam to stop the fuel slosh....Low fuel levels seam to cause a handling issue when making quick transitions.

Dave if I do it I will use a Surge tank and a low pressure pump to feed the tank and then feed the Bosch FI pump from there. I also did one of these on a GT4 car using a infinity Q45 in tank pump and just made a bracket to put it directly in the in cell surge tank. There are lots of choices but the key is keep the air out of the system. The only reason I would put a cell in is to get the fuel more stable when changing directions. Right now I have to start a race with a full load of fuel and we are trying to put this car and driver on a diet...Like most sedan drivers there isn't a race horse that would even let me in the saddle.....

Hey Dave... If you've had your car on the scales, would you mind divuldging the race weight you were able to achieve?? Mine right now is at 2758-2775, depending on how much fuel is in the tank, but I'm still running the stock exhaust manifold, which weighs about 25lbs with the Y-Pipe... I have a few other areas where I'm going to try to get some weight down (potential fuel cell will eventually be one of them...), but I'm curious as to just how close the the 2650 minimum weight one of these can actually be made to get?

You can e-mail me privately if you don't want the publicity! [email protected]

    Thanks!

Darin, My 95 S14 with me (165lbs) and less than a 1/4 tank of fuel (according to the guage} in the stock tank weighed in at 2671!! I was surprised because I too had fears of never being able to get the car close to minimum wt. There are a few new pics on my website www.murphymotorsports.net

David... Well... you have 60lbs on me just in driver weight! The other 19lbs I've already figured I'll lose when I finally find an appropriate header (preferably at the same time when I have some $$$ to BUY said header...) as I am still running the stock exhaust manifold, which weighs 25lbs with y-pipe...

Looks like a trip to the treadmill is in order! Since 205 is the lightest I would ever want to be... looks like I'd better start getting creative with the "it says you can" part of the rule book!

I have to second spending a little more money on a SE model. You won't have to go through the trouble of converting it to 5 lugs for the Z brakes (if you want to do that) and it's a lot easier to find wheels in that bolt pattern. Also, you get a LSD. You'll need the LSD for when you drop the SR20 or RB25 in there

    Tim,
You aren't implying that I am a hopeless horsepower junkie, are you???? Sounds like you know me all too well.

Are you coming up to Daytona this weekend? IF this thing will stay together and its owner doesn't do anything too stupid, it ought to be good...

I can't make it to Daytona this weekend. I have a Rotax Max Challenge kart race at Homestead. I got third at the first race last month in a very ill handling kart. Gotta get it sorted out on Saturday for Sunday's race.

I just bought another S13 for $50 (motor siezed).
It's getting a SR20DET and going on Ebay. When it's done, I'll drive it out to a race and let you drive it, so you can see what your (future) S14 is missing.
