Help for an anemic motor

Just started getting into this race thing and not very knowledgeable, but ready and willing to learn. I am fixing a 1985 318I 5Speed. Some have told me that my motor is anemic. What can I systematically do to improve performance?

Check the compression first. Your old motor may be in need of a rebuild.

Other tips:
clean/replace the injectors, air filter, fuel filter
New exhaust.
Free flowing intake.
From there, the sky is the limit.
