    Default e36 front spoiler

Anyone tried to get the SCCA to allow the M3 front spoiler on the e36 ITS cars? Not the little black spoiler at the bottom, but the whole front spoiler. I maybe wrong, but can't the rx-7 guys use the GTU or Turbo II front spoiler? Just a thought...

Why would it be a problem?

Rules say it can be modified 4" above center of the wheels. The bumper cover on our car extends above this point. No problem if the M3 was the same above this, but it juts out about 1" - definitely different, one of the fine points I don't think you can get past.

Isn't any front spoiler/airdam allowed as long as it meets the dimensional requirements? (not protruding outside of the body work when viewed from above and no lower than the lowest part of the rims)

Yes, but the M3 part protrudes 1" or so in the area of the license plate when viewed from above.

    James,
Do you think the stock M3 front spoiler will
have more downforce than the stock spoiler plus the little black spoiler?

Probably not - we have been running without the front spoiler with no problems at all. We have a few front splitters that we made, but we have never spent the time tuning for them so we don't use them yet.

James, correct me if I am wrong, but the e36 M3 splitter and rear wing were in fact spoilers and were not there to promote downforce as wings are intedted to do. They were there primarily to smoth the airflow around the car for more stability and driver confidence, and more importantly because BMW Marketing wouldn't have it any other way - right?

It was only the Motorsport splitter and big rear wing available after the release of the Lightweight M3 that were effective - and they were good for 600#'s of downforce front AND rear...

Now, get those things aproved (homologated) and then you will see a benefit!

I think the M3 front spoiler does add more DF than the stock 325. How much I don't know, but if you look at the frontal area of both spoilers the M3 has a more forward area out at the outer edges thus allowing better air flow downward. This effect can attribute to "more stability and driver confidence". I don't think BMW is into just adding something that makes the car look better, especially on the M cars.

M3 should have more downforce - an educated guess from looking at it. The 325 cover slopes backward as it goes to the ground, the M3 is more straight and then has the lip extension that acts as a splitter. Either way, the added lip spoiler with an undertray/splitter will give more downforceif that is what you are after. You can't get a ton of Hp out of an IT car though so I am not sure how much additional downforce will help (or hurt).
