    Default A/C compressor?

So this weekend I said to the kid, "Let's take the RX ('91 GXL), it's got working air...", thus jinxing the weekend. This of course after verbalizing serious thoughts of selling it.

On the return trip, stopped to look at another car and started getting lots of vibrations, then firecracker sounds, and smoke from under the hood. Ran back turned off the a/c, and things got back to normal.

Back home, let it cool for an hour or so, fired it up, ran for a while, then started the firecracker (or large voltage arcing?) sound and smoke again. (couldn't decipher from where). Started the car again, turned on a/c and it killed the car.

I cannot readily see any burned wires, but is it possible to have electrical problems causing this? Could it be just a frozen compressor causing issues? Perhaps the cogged belt hopping around.

If it does end up being the compressor, anyone have one laying around, known good that needs a good home?

I've got a complete AC system out of an '88. Seemed to work when I took it apart about 2 years ago, but I never drove the car. It's been laying around in my shop ever since.

    Thanks Marty,
I'll do some more investigation to verify they are similar. I think it was a Sanyo unit, but I will get some more details and maybe a picture for comparison. I will also look at the compressor clutch, some have said that could be the issue.

How can I get ahold of you offline?
