    Default RX-7 Tailshaft Bearing

Anyone know a part number for the bearing in the RX-7 tranny tail housing? Looks from the microfiche that you have to order the whole tail housing. Please tell me this isn't true.

    Chris,

I have rebuilt a few of the trannys and I didn't recall a bearing in the tail housing. What item number are you looking at in the fiche?

While I can't speak to the RX7 tranny specifically, I have been involved in import automotive parts for over 15 years.

Some OEM manufacturers do indeed expect you to buy the whole tailshaft housing, but that doesn't mean you're out of luck. Virtually any driveline/transmission shop worth going to should be able to supply you with the proper tailshaft bushing. Just grab the Yellow Pages and start dialing.

The one the driveshaft yoke rides in. Bushing actually.

    I'll try that Chris. Thanks.

if that doesn't work, check out mazda motorsports.com they've got a needle bearing for it, requires modding the tailshaft a bit. You know you could always pull out the bushing, and go to your local bearing supply company and match it up.

I thought of that but a needle bearing wouldn't be legal.

84-5 bushing is part # 0398-17-333. Mazda motorsports will send you a trans parts diagram out of their parts catalog if you ask them nice when you're ordering.

Thanks alot. I've got the fiche with all the other parts but they only show the tail housing as one piece. Oh well.

    Chris,

I've been searching the forum for info about the same issue and have found what I believe is a viable answer for IT racing. If you haven't fixed the problem by now I would suggest calling Mike Wiggins at RX7 Heaven in Dexter, MO.

    http://www.rx7heaven.com/index.htm

Mike suggested simply buying a complete used tail housing. He has many just sitting around and they are not expensive. Just a thought.

    Good Luck!
