    Default Legal Ignition Mods?

We're looking at doing some ignition mods to our 1st gen 12a to get that last ounce of HP/torque out of it, or blow it up trying!

According to the 01 GCR (yes I know, outdated):
Any ignition system which utilizes the original distributor for spark timing and distribution is permitted. Internal distributor components and distributor cap may be substituted. Crankfire ignition systems are prohibited unless fitted as original equipment. Any spark plugs and ignition wires may be used. Ignition timing is unrestricted.

It doesn't say anything about aftermarket coils, so are these free? "Internal distributor components and distributor cap may be substituted"... doesn't that leave it open for modified caps and "air" rotors? I've seen multiple MSD direct fire setups... so these are legal???

Just trying to see what my options are.

It seems that ignition topics are few and far between on this IT board... maybe the topic is taboo and I'm poking a hornets nest with a stick!

The first word in the rule is "Any...". That would mean that all of the components not otherwise stipulated are free, including the coils. It means that you must use the distributor to deliver the spark to the plugs, but that the cap and internal components may be changed. If by "direct fire setups" you are implying that some one is bypassing the distributor, then that is illegal.

I've been reading through some pretty old posts but I see that you guys are both regulars so that tells me you have some experience with RX7's in ITA (now IT7 which is great!). My question is... what do you think about running 2nd Gen ignition coils in your car? I seem to remember reading somewhere that they can increase HP. What is your experience? Thank you in advance for your input.

Wow!! Here's a blast from the past!

If I recall correctly, the 2nd gen coils require some kind of minor wiring magic, but I could be wrong. There's some info on the swap over at www.mazspeed.com

The MSD Blasters are pretty popular as well, but for $70, you can get a bunch of 2nd Gen coils

Are you going to be at the double school at Gateway in March?

It's always hard to tell objectively if changes make a difference. I got a distributor prepared by Mike VanSteenburg at ISC Racing Services and Blaster 2 coils a few years ago. It seemed to help. Really good plug wires are must.

Well, the GCR wording is still the same. I understand the MSD and distributor for spark timming. But how, when using two coils fired from the MSD directly to the leading plugs, is the distributor being used for spark distribution. I know it is still being used for the trailing, so if the rule doesn't state 'all' distribution then we are OK?

Not trying to but I have all the parts, the time, and the curiosity.

Wow this is an aged thread. I am still trying to figure out the distributor on my 82 RX7 ITA/7. I am still afraid to take the distributor cap off.

Hey, I don't believe the rules specifically say you can take the distributor cap off!
