12A timing tips?

The new junkyard 12A ran great for a weekend at Road America. For that weekend we (john the wrench and I) just left everything factory spec to make sure we got through it. Now that we know the motor runs I'd like to experiment with advancing the timing. It would be great if we had one of them high tech timing lights with an advancing setting, but... um... we don't.

Can a nice timing setting be found just using a 'joe average' timing light and does anyone have any timing tips? I know that it would take a dyno day to get this correct, I'd just like to get a little more power out of the engine for this one last race of the year. (Blawkhawk oct. 11/12th, see you there).

I gotta start saving the info I come across, but I'm almost positive that you DONT want the fancy dial type timing lights. I'm pretty sure the timing topic has been covered here before....

You are right about the dyno being the way, but it certainly wouldn't take a whole day.

Do a base line run where you are currently set, then do one with the dist. moved just a little bit each way. You can then see which direction to go in, and maybe do 2 or 3 more runs. A run takes all of 2 minutes, and you can do the whole thing from on trailer to back on trailer in 2 hours max.
