    Default Head Gasket

I am getting the normal run around from the dealership. About a year ago I purchased an all metal (3 individual layers) head gasket directly from the dealership. I didn't even have to ask for that one...I said "head gasket" and that's what they had. I need to purchase another head gasket because of some work I'm doing. I called the dealership to make sure they have the all metal and NOT the one-piece gasket with the flaky gray crap in stock. Now they tell me that the one piece is all they have and Honda probably stopped making the 3-layer one.

The part number he gave me was 12251-PM5-S02 but according to slhondaparts.com there is another one for the same price, 12251-PM5-S01. He said the computer shows that they are just crossed referenced and are one in the same. I would buy the Cometic 3-layer gasket but they are about $100.

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

As far as I know all the OEM gaskets are 3 peice metal gaskets. notice the one piece one in your pic is a felpro. the OEM ones are usually riveted together w/ a copper gromet. So they appear to be one piece. maybe this leads to confusion you are experiencing from the parts guys...

The grey "crap" gasket seems to work well for me. I'd stop fighting with the dealer, buy the aftermarket (felpro or better) and get the motor back together and go racing.

I found out a couple of weeks ago that the OEM 88-91 CRX gasket is the one-piece cork/gray material. The OEM multi layer steel gasket can be obtained by purchasing a head gasket for a '96 Civic EX. Turns out that the dealer actually gave me the one I really wanted by mistake a year ago. The better part is that the CRX gasket is $44 but the Civic gasket is $23 : )

i don't know what class you are running in but, the late model gasket you're talking about is not the same thickness as the 88-91 gasket. honda does make a steel gasket for the 88-91 it's 4 layers and the one you will need to be legal in IT if that's where you are running, if you need the part # let me know.
