VW added to GTS Challenge for 2005

The GTS Challenge rules for 2005 have been posted to the GTS website:

In perhaps the most overdue change, VW has been added to the list of accepted manufacturers, joining Audi, BMW, Porsche, and Mercedes.

What does that mean for my ITB MkIII? There's little question that it would be a GTS1 car but I would normally run NASA events on my SCCA car logbook.

DO the GTS Challenge cars run as a separate group at any East coast events?

Correct, you'd most certianly be GTS1.

Run groups are determined by the NASA Region/race director, and are usually based on car counts. Each region/track could potentially have their own thresholds for run groups, but things usually are not set in stone, and distinct run groups can vary. The most common arrangement I'm aware of in the VA and SE Regions is Big Bore/Small Bore split. OTOH, sometimes GTS, SM, 944Cup, or AI/AIX can be split out if the situation calls for it.

Used to be me and my stylin' front-Porche. Occasional participation from the odd IT BMW, even one very slow ITS Merc. But now with the 2005 classes, the slow end of what used to be GTS2 has been shifted to GTS1, so that'd be the 8V 944's, mainly - ranging from PCA Stock classes to even slower (non-Milledge) ITS.

This sounds like a class made for some of our Turbo stuff. Any fuel restrictions?

As in diesel vs. gas? No, the only that might apply would be at a NASA level, and I don't believe they rule out diesel. I could check if you'd like; I would certainly hope that it's allowed.

Or are you talking about other stuff?

Generally speaking, the rules are pretty wide open...

Racing fuel for the warm up idle area and Methanol for the higher boost application.

Is there any limit on fuel systems?

As suspected, there are some restrictions in the NASA CCR (under which we race) regarding fuel. The section is 18.5, and while you'd be best off to refer directly to it, the summary is that gasoline of any grade is allowed. Use of anything else (methanol, nitrous, etc) must receive special approval from the Race Director. The only exceptions are for HPR and SU classes.

I don't forsee that methanol or Nitrous are consistent with our class philosophy, and so I couldn't see making any changes to allow them.
