    Default 1.7 liter VWs

Does anyone else besides me think that maybe all the 1.7 VWs should be in ITC instead of ITB, I mean they have the same basic head, valves, cam, pistons, compression, rods, brakes as the 1.6 vws in ITC. The transmission the 1.7s have is a wider ratio than the 1.6 cars. I know they might have a tick more hp, but the cars weigh more too. There is so much in common between the 1.6 and 1.7 liter cars, and hardly anything in common between the 1.7 and more commonly driven 1.8 vws in ITB. So... shouldnt the 1.7s be in ITC?

Given the recent move of the A3 2.0 8v cars to ITB, I couldn't agree w/ you more, and have actually been contemplating writing a letter. Not only should the 1.7's get moved to ITC (probably should have been there from the start), but so should the 1.8 8v Rabbit GTI's. Anybody want to bet what the response will be?

    A) Not enough member interest
    Classed correctly
    C) Referred to the AC
    D) Previously addressed, no action required.

    Bill,
I'll go along with the 1.7 being in ITC, in fact, I'd probably go with the 1.6 over the 1.7, but a 1.8? :If this was allowed there would have to be a complete re-alignment of classifications(hondas, Ford escorts 1.9 liter etc..).I think it would open the flood gates for other cars to be re-classed.
Can I replace a 1.6 block with a 1.7.(just the block). I damaged my 1.6 block and we have a couple 1.7 blocks laying around. This probably falls under the "replace major components in the entirety" rule, but what is different about them?
    Thanks, Drew

    racerdrew43,

the only real difference between the 1.7 and the 1.6 motor is the crank, it has more stroke, other than that the motors are basically the same, the motors and heads do have different castings, but dimensionallly are the same.

I am pretty sure that Chris would NOT agree that the 1.8L 8V Rabbit GTI needs to move to ITC at this time. A couple of years ago he built a motor for someone, and has driven the car since then and been very close to his Golf times. And this is a car that, uhm, shall we say (I'm trying to be nice) may not be kept to the limit of it's preparedness. I know for a fact that he thinks a Rabbit can be faster on certain tracks.

However, depending upon the success of the 2.0L cars, this opinion could change.

Actually, the "H" block is a much better block than the 1.6 block. This was the Chrysler block for the Omni. Most of the old Super Vee folks wanted the "H" block. I'm not sure of the actual differences, but the 1.6 crank/rods fit since it's the same bore.

If anybody wants a 1.7 "H" short block let me know. Crank is .010" and the rods are .020".

Remember that the #3 rod bearing is the last in the oil flow.

    Tim,

The Omni blocks were actually beefier castings, that's why everyone wanted one. I had an old-school 1935 stroker motor that was built from an H block. Great motor, and now a friend of mine Auto-X's it in FSP

    Lesley,

Chris will have his chance to voice his opinon on the 1.8 GTI in ITC as the letter has been sent.

    Hi Tim, Bill,
My question was more of a legality. If I show up for an event with an H block am I in trouble?
    Thanks guys, Drew

Drew, I would say no, since the bore/stroke are the same. If someone is going to get "that" anal, then they most likely get you for the 4.999999999" ride height, or some rust spots, or ....

Let make ask this question again, because I think it got blurred with the 1.8 gti which I dont believe should be an ITC car. Is there any good reason why the 1.7 cars should not be in ITC? Doesnt it make more since that they be placed in ITC?
