Default A1 Jetta rear spoiler - Eric P. or anyone

    Hi guys,

I've read on various sites of an A1 (1982 - 1984) Jetta rear spoiler, either standard or as an option. As we are building the car to full prep EP, I thought a rear spoiler may help to balance the rear out at speed or under braking. I don't know how effective the rear spoiler is, but it should have some effect.

Can anyone confirm this and do you have any hard evidence I can get my hands on (have to keep those tech guys at bay). Eric "O' keeper of the fiche" Parham, where are you?

    Thanks for any help guys,

    Alex

    Careful!

I don't think the Production Car Specs allows rear spoilers, even if they came that way stock from the factory.

I don't have mine handy, but I seem to recall that RX-7's and CRX's had to remove the 'factory' rear spoiler.

Oops! I dropped the ball again. I hate when that happens, I will have to consult the GCR/PCS. Thanks Greg.

I checked my PCS last night.

Not the clearest spec book in any case. I found one section that stated FRONT spoilers are permitted and listed all the maximum dimensions, placement yada, yada, ect.

There is no mention of a rear spoiler. I would suspect that if it doesn't say you can, you can't.

The spec line for the RX7 DOES specifically states the OEM spoiler MUST BE REMOVED. Nothing on the CRX but I seem to recall hearing something at the Prod open house tent at the run-offs, so possibly a Fasttrack item?

The rule in question stems from the statement in the begining of the PCS that states that cars classed in production shall be the BASE MODEL, my words, my emphasis.

It's when the spec line is for a car that isn't the base mocel, say A CRX Si, that it gets confusing. My interpretation is that the BASE CRX Si stuff is allowed.

Read that part again, and your spec line, and make your own call.

    Thanks guys,

I read thru the PCS a couple of times and came to the same conclusion as you Greg. (I needed my trust decoder ring to decipher the rule book ) Not a major sticking point but would be nice to have a rear spoiler.

I think I'll take this question to the powers that be and see what happens.

    Thanks again,

    Alex

    Alex,

Don't know if you are aware of the Prod car website or not

    http://www.coloradoscca.org/prodcar/

This would be a better place to post this question.

FYI, I looked at the photos for E/F Prod from the run-offs http://www.showcase-photo.com and I didn't see a spoiler on any of the cars. Hard to see cause these were all front 3/4 shots, but it looked like the CRX's (std & Si) had the 'stock' rear spoiler removed (1st gen, which had them on base model & Si & 2nd gen). The only car that looked like it had anything at all was an old Alfa spyder, possibly the 'Graduate' edition with the rear lip??

    Thanks Greg.

I'm a memeber of the Prod forum. Just thought I'd throw the question up here first to determine if a rear spoiler even exists, then see if it is allowed. Being that this was a VW specific question. I know, kind of like putting the cart in front of the horse. What can I say, I had a brain fart. If the spoiler isn't allowed, then there's no point in seeing if one exists for the Jetta.
