Default How do you guys setup 'engine breathers'?

Trying to clean up the engine compartment, and remove the engine/valve cover breather on my Rabbit GTI and get rid of the old cracking hoses, and replace with a K&N breather, but the rulebook says you must use a catchtank... Well, official 'catchtanks' are around $100, can I make my own? Are there any downsides/upsides to removing the stock setup?

    PJ,

I've got my 'breather hose' running to an old Valvoline 1 Qt. oil bottle. Cost: ~$1.00, including a quart of oil!!!

Upside on a VW is that you no longer suck oil into your intake!

    Bill,

Some of us cannot be such a "big" spender as yourself.....Drain the washer fluid resorvoir, sell the fluid (you can get about $.97 for it) and then use that as your catch tank

    Alan +$.97
    Bill -$1.00

Yeah, and you can get all that weight off the front of the car too!

Well unlike Bill and Alan, I guess I went the wrong way, Summit racing sell a cool looking plastic catch can for about $20 (it is even red, i.e. worth 4-6hp). I think Summit has in the coolant catch can area of the catalog. It comes with a quite little K&N style air breather. Before that I had a plastic 1L water sample container from a lab. Mounted with a large hose clap.

    Alan +$0.97
    Bill -$1.00
Ron -$20 (but mine is red)

But make sure you don't hit the wiper/washer stalk during a race!!!

How much oil does your (the group) catch can accumulate after say 1 hour racing (1/2 hour qual + 1/2 hour race) ?

My 83 A1 GTI 'makes' about 1/3 quart!

Is my engine (rings) ready to go bad?

Just make sure that you don't overfill. My GTI only takes 4.5 quarts. I made the mistake of putting 5 qts in, and I had a full catch tank for 2 sessions.

Although my Wabbit is a HP car, ran 8 races in 2001 and the "catch" can was completely dry all season. Sounds like your rings are going south, allowing blow-by. Regards, Ryan.

Well after 7 races and a 12 hour race plus test day I have little or nothing in my catch can, which is the emptied out washer fluid res. Don't tell anyone though because apparently people want to start protesting not having a full res. Oops

I hope you don't disable the washer bottle in this exercise, or you might be ruled illegal...no washer bottle...not allowed in the rules!!!

And you know who of your friends are looking for these "technical" points.

    Shame, Shame guys.
