Hi Racy-Stacey,

Just checking on your AutoCAD knowledge. (This is a test!)

Question 1: When you XREF a file into your drawing, what is the difference between using the "attachment" feature versas the "overlay" feature?

Question 2: In AutoCAD 2005, how would you print your metric unit drawing (to scale) on an Imperial unit sheet, when the new plot screen doesn't indicate any metric units for sheet size?

Ok let me try to explain this...

Question 1.
Concerning - overlay - By using an overlay Xref. you attach a .dwg to your drawing and if its referenced by another drawing your overlay xref wont show in the current drawing. There is no nesting in overlaid xrefs.

Concerning - Attachment - You will have a nested xref. If the drawing is referenced by another any attached xrefs will show in the current drawing.

In both cases when accessing a drawing that holds xrefs the latest drawing information from the last saved point will be displayed.

You can go into the Xref Manager and RELOAD your xrefs from time to time if you work in an inviroment where xrefs are being updated reguarly.

Question 2.
I havent tryed what you are talking about. But I would create a dimstyle that converts the units to metric. I would probably use a decimal units system then in the Dimstyle dialog [primary units]plug in the conversion factor and in the suffix box add [ mm ] So all dims will show mm. Draw as normal in model space and then create you TB in Paper space- Create a viewport - zoom #/# xp. plot as normal.

Sounds like you know what your talking about! Someone hire her!

The simple answer to question 2 is to just create a custom metric sheet size in the equivalent Imperial unit size: Ie: 24"x36" would be 609mm X 914mm. Then the sheet size & scale user input (in the print dialogue box) will automatically display Metric units so that you can print the metric layout space drawing with a scale of 1:1 without changing anything else.

OK let's get back to racing...

BTW, I started using AutoCAD back in 1986.
