Default New to IT---NEW LINK REQUEST

    All,

Wouldn't it be beneficial to have a "New to IT-Start Here" link in the banner of our beloved IT.com? This would eliminate many of the same basic questions that we receive time and time again (not insulting anyone who is new, I asked the same questions when I started...this would be for your benefit). It could be as simple as a static page, content provided, organized, and put together by us.

    Some simple thoughts:

-Definition of IT (please refrain from sarcastic comments, facts only)
    -Basic set of rules
    -Helpful links
    -BUY A GCR
    -Join the SCCA
    .....stuff like that

Now, if someone would like to take the lead on this, I am sure others will chime in with material...I unfortunately do not have the time right now to lead it, but would be more than willing to pitch in with some material.

I believe that this will help those wishing to start in IT, and maybe increase our numbers...SOMETIMES (I KNOW this is rare) when newbies ask questions, we MAY go a LITTLE off topic into our little side-conversations. Having a factual-only page that answers the generic stuff would help out tremendously.

    Thoughts? Volunteers?

    Regards,
    Alan

I like it. I believe the new BB software allows for "sticky" threads to remain at the top of the list and be locked.

    Gregg,

I was thinking more of replacing one of the unused links in the header (replace maybe news or simply add a new one), and make it a "static" page, so it is easier to maintain.

But if the collective likes it in the forum, then that is what we shall go with.

    Regards,
    Alan

    Alan,

Ah, got it. Never gave it a moment's thought.

Regardless of the mechanics, I think it is a great idea.

Yeah, we are never so direct to go to a side conversation. Our's always seem to take some strange circuitous route.

Perhaps it's because we're almost all guys and we just won't stop for directions when we get off the path?

All in all though, I think we, as a board, do pretty well, although, once in awhile, we can be pretty quick to write "Get a GCR!"

Certainly a section for newbs with FAQs is in order.

Actually, I really like the idea put forth on the first post. But, I can't say anything because I have no time to work on something like that.

Short of someone building a page to help a newb wade through the basics an FAQ section would be great.

I put together a similar post with a link to Newbie info & FAQ's for our race series, Atlantic Region Motorsports. Something similar could be done here. Feel free to copy any info off the webpage.

I would think it would be one of those things that could be incorporated into the new portal, when it's up and running. Please don't take this as a knock. I know Bill is probably up to his eyeballs in alligators, and it's tough to find time for 'hobbies'.
