Default SCCA CLUB RACER FATALLY INJURED AT TOPEKA REGIONAL

    Another tragic accident...

Anyone have more details on this ?

    Regards,

    Bhima

From the SCCA Press Release page:

TOPEKA, Kan. (April 5, 2004) – Dave Pistole, 53, of Pittsburg, Kan., was fatally injured in a single-car, on-track incident at Heartland Park Saturday afternoon during the Sports Car Club of America Club Racing Regional event there.

Witnesses said the accident occurred near turn one of the road course when Pistole’s Grand Touring 2 Porsche 911 went off the left side of the track into the grass, crossed back over the course and ran into a barrier.

Emergency crews were on the scene immediately and Pistole was transported by helicopter to the Kansas University Medical Center in Kansas City where he later died from injuries sustained in the crash.

“The entire family at SCCA wants to extend its heartfelt condolences to Dave’s wife, Evelyn, and everyone else in his family,” said Steve Johnson, SCCA President and CEO. “We want them to know that he will always be remembered as part of SCCA.”

Pistole had been a member of SCCA since 1985. He is survived by his wife, Evelyn, 55; two sons; T.C., 29, and Sean, 25; and daughter, Ann, 22.

A funeral Mass is tentatively scheduled for 10 a.m. Wednesday at Sacred Heart Catholic Church in Frontenac, Kan.

Jesse Prather posted this over on the Production forum. He saw the accident and it sounds like the accident didn't look too bad, it was the fire afterward that had everyone worried. Sadly it doesn't matter what the circumstances or the cause, it's the outcome that has everyone's concern.

I was at the track as well on Saturday. I would disagree about the incident looking bad. It happened righ after the new kink in the front straight. Pretty tough to see that sort of thing happen. you know it CAN hapen, but you do not expect it at YOUR home track.

Thoughts and prayers are with Dave's family.

Jesse did a very nice job of telling about the incident without going into detail over on the Prod board.

    It was bad.

Please, everyone - honor the memory of this and other similar tragic events when making decisions about driver suits and having those open-vs-full-face helmet conversations.

Everyone might want to know that Dave Pistole suffered as little as possible during the tragic event that ended his life, as he was apparently rendered unconscious by the impact, according to the medical examiner's office.
