pyrometer: infrared vs. contact vs. ?

For measuring tire temperatures, what's the best tool? Is there a big difference between the measurements of infrared and contact type pyrometers?
Is there any model that is recommended over another?

I've seen a few cheap infrareds that are intended for use in cooking, but can handle the temperature ranges our tires see, is this a good cheap alternative?

The problem w/the laser type(tire temps)is itmainly measures surface temp.Just like your body temp you need to read core temp,the probe type (when properly used)you actually stick it in the rubber!! i need to get me a laser type for ie rotor temps and such. mike g.

Get the longest prong you can find. The pros use one that is more than 1/2 long and they poke it down to the carcass rubber...

I have both and while I do know that a probe pyro is better, the infared pyro is easier for crew to deal with ie spouses and friends and can be used to "confirm" that the setup is working. The infared has so many other uses too ie air temp, rad temp, that I would get it first.
