Does Racing help?

Here's an odd question for you guys and gals.
Does saying you race cars really work as a cool "pick up line" for lack of a better term?

Unfortunately, as soon as you say race...they either think "illegal street racing", or roundy-round stuff (beer guts and flannel).

See, y'all are doing it all wrong.

When asked about how much money you win, the response should be "well, it's not about the money."

Follow that with some story about the thrill of the chase and your unquenchable desire for adrenaline and danger, or some such drivel.

Avoid questions about how fast we go, since she probably drives faster on the intrastate highway.

If you happen to race with NASA, throw in there that you race with "NASA Pro Racing" or if you have run at the ARRC mention that you went to the "national championship race."

If you happen to wear a Porsche, Ferarri, or Corvette Racing jacket or hat usually you won't be hit with the very real and humbling possibility of having to tell her you race a 20 year old Honda Civic.

Actually Chris, the answer is No. But I hear that chicks dig Sparco suits.

Perhaps if Richard hot-glued $100 bills to a Sparco suit...

Actually, the answer is a great big YES! A group of us started racing together. One of the friends, my roomate at the time, took a bunch of pictures of us at the track. One picture had us all standing around the cars with our suits on. My friend took the pictures to show his dad and sister what he was doing during the summer. His sister asked, "Who's that in the racing suit" while she pointed to me. He said, my roomate. Three weeks later, I was setup on a blind date. We, my wife and I, have been together ever since. Yes, I kicked the roomate out.

On a serious note, if she doesn't like racing just accomodate her. Don't try to drag her into it, or let it interfer with your time together.

My wife, for example, is not a fan, so her lack of interest--and my aging parents--keep me away from the tracks on most weekends.

However, I make up for it when the opportunity permits. When she went to the west coast for her sister's baby shower, I hit every track within 100 miles and taped every race I could find on the dish.

I must have had a dazed look in my eyes and smelled of exhaust when she returned. She took one look/wiff and said, "Racing overdose again."

I was just wondering because allot of folks say "yeah it's a great way to pick up girls." I'm only eighteen, I have a while before I have to worry about that sort of thing. Do allot of people split up because of racing?
It takes a good bite of time, money, energy, money, and money.

I'm a lucky man. My wife is our team Den Mother and she even went to the local dirt track with me last weekend. What a hoot. She even listened patiently as I explained the finer points of riding the cushion.

Aw, you guys have it easy. I live in a small town where everyone's seen me drunk. Everybody knows I'm into racing (usual conversation with my friends "Oh, my God, I recognize you! You're that Tracy chick I used to hang out with. Where have you been? Wait, let me guess - a race track.") I volunteer, and I started driving this year. Between that, socializing with my ex-husband, and being smart AND cute, most guys chalk me off as "weird", or assume that I only date rich former frat boys.

My generation grew up with the notion that you fix your car by taking it to a professional, and tools are those things laborers use. Try batting your eyes and saying "yeah, I work in tech, I race, and I'm bumbling my way through fixing my own car. No, I haven't seen a movie in a year, and I don't watch much TV. I own more computers than you, I own more cars than you, I have more tools than you, and I live in fear that the condo association will complain about the tires stacked on my balcony. Oh, yeah, and I'm probably a hell of a lot smarter than you, too." It's fun making bets with myself whether they'll walk away, or run.

At least I live near San Francisco; some of the women still flirt with me. ;-)

Tracy, I remember when racing my ITB VW Scirocco in 1993-1994, living in an UPSTAIRS condo, and having the race car under a car cover in the carport, and my VW Rabbit (Current race car), Dodge RamCharger (Tow vehicle), and trailer parked on the street, and not being able to build up the motor in the living room, because I couldn't CARRY the assembled engine down the stairs, so I had to finish the assembly in the carport.

Welcome to the racing season. Does it ever end? Nope, I hope not.

Now if I could find a new job.

OMG this is a good topic.

Well Sparco suits are sexy but I like and wear a MOMO..

When I was single guys would always ask the typical how fast do you go. Then they follow up with isnt it too dangerous. Then the "Thats nice" or "ok...". If I get that one, it means the guys feeling inferior to my accomplishemts.

Lately when I mention to people that I race cars they look at me and ask what my times are. Sheeesh dammm Fast and Fictious movie has got all the kids thinking 1/4mile is living.. I tell them I dont do 1/4mile. Thats boring. I rather spend 20min a session on track at 2:30 a lap.

I tell them I think the car is about 15.2 15.7 1/4mile time, and they say thats slow.. I'm like omg get a F'ing clue..

I get street challenges all the time. I just give them a few throttle blips and a nod and thats about it. Street racing is for fools.

And yeah - Do you win money... umm no.. *sigh* its tough talking to kids about Club Racing - they make you feel like your racing the equivilent of a simulation coin-op game.

Its tought to get through to the younger crowd. But I try to explain how it is - "Guys listen 1/4 13sec your done, till about 2 hrs later then you get another 13 of racing. I get 20min sessions or longer and about 4 a day. I run through all the gears like you do but I get to corner, brake, and slide a little."
