    Default Pop-up windows

I'm not sure what the deal is with these pop-up windows. When I access improvedtouring.com at home, they don't show up, but when I'm at work, these windows are showing up all the time. They are getting quite aggressive, even to the point they are changine some settings on my computer or locking up the internet for me. Can someone shed some light on this for me? Is there anything anyone recommends to minimize this? Or, is this something with the sight? We are a fairly large company, so we have all the "normal" safegards in place, but this issue is becoming quite irritating and I am not much of a computer person. I run Windows XP on my work computer, but only Windows 95 at home.

    John,

Popups can be blocked with the current (2004) version of Norton System Works. There are other solutions too, but this works well in my experience.

I think the other problem you have is spyware. Try "Spybot - Search & Destroy" at http://www.safer-networking.org/en/index.html

I'm surprised your comp group at work lets this happen.

    John -

I second Gregg's suggestion. I access IT.com from home and work (on my coffee breaks, of course), and never have any problems with pop-ups. Let your network guys know what's going on, they should be able to fix you up. You'll be amazed at how much adware is probably living on your hard drive.

    Just dump Internet Exploder.

Get Opera or Monzilla Firefox. Both can be configured to only allow the pop-ups you request.

    John:

What kind of pop-ups are they? Do they have graphics, or are they text only?

If they are text only, you need to have your IT dept install (at the minimum) SP1a for XP. If they are loaded with graphics as well, I'd suspect Spyware. Your IT dept should be able to remove these, but, if not, here are my two favorites (and they work well):

    SpyBot S&D: http://www.safer-networking.org
    Ad Aware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com

10-4 George. I switched to Firefox as soon as it came out and have no intention of going back.

The Monzilla 'Firefox'...sounds like a pretty cool car!

Maybe I should jump to....can I import my "favorites" like IT.com, and Isaac (Gregg..sites kinda static lately...maybe we can use a fire bottle on my car in the pits this year to freshen up the'joke' photo section! ) into this Mozila monster?

Where do I get it? freeware perhaps?

I haven't had pop up trouble, but I know others with the same OS and ISP who do. I run McAffe and have done spyware searches that netted some of the scum on the harddrive, and now life is pop up free!

Get the one with the CD changer option.

It imports favorites and does a few other slick things. The only thing I have found that it does not do is support some sites that use specific "style" coding--at least I think that's the term the programmers use--or proprietary plug ins.

It's free, which is better than ultra dirt cheap.

For the record, there are no pop up ads on IT.com. Nor will there ever be!

In fact there will never be any ads on IT.com that are not in some way related to autoracing.
