Default Tow Vehicle and Trailer Forum...Yea/Nay

OK...since the last time I proposed this, it seems we have some more supporters. Please give me a Yea/Nay (change of pace from yes/no) to adding Tow Vehicle and Trailer forum.

It's going to ruin IT as we know it. I was there when the founding fathers wrote the rules and I am confident that they never intended that tow vehicles be serviced or trailer tongue weight be checked. We've had a lot of creep over the ensuing years, most of which doesn't fundamentally align with the category as originally envisioned. Heck, the allowance for trailer anti-sway devices can be traced back to one BMW driver in the early '90s who did a back-room deal with a now-discredited area director.

NOBODY anticipated the technological advances that we have today - tow a race trailer with a Cummins turbo diesel? Never happen. Unfortunately, we have to accommodate these changes for IT towing to grow as a category. There is going to come a time when it will be impossible to find parts for an ex-phone company F150 shortbox, old school bus, or 1970s Minnie Winnie. Are proponents of these vintage towing outfits proposing that we change the rules because they can't find NOS heater cores, washer bottles, or passenger-side door glass? At some point we need to cut this kind of thinking loose.

There has to be some formula that can be applied - considering trailer weight, Cd, interior volume, and number of built-in cabinets - that would allow everyone to tow safely AND equitably. We just have to jigger the numbers to make them work. The first step might be painful but would make this process simpler: Phase out old-technology, open trailers so the formula only has to deal with one type of platform.

Any conversation about trailers has to at least attempt to anticipate unanticipated consequences, arising as a consquence of things that we don't anticipate. Is paddock space an issue? Certainly. Does everyone have AC and a sat dish to watch the Indy 500 when racing on Memorial Day weekend? Certainly not. Do some people have trailers that match their tow vehicle's paint scheme? I believe so. Do I always ask my own really simple questions rather than answering the complicated ones that really matter? Absolutely. Do I have the faintest clue what I'm talking about? Let's consider pit bikes for a moment...
