    Default 240 or 280?

I'm just starting to race after a fifteen year absence. I bought a 76 280 with 240 running gear, Ground control suspension. The question is, should I build a 280 and use the five speed or use the car for drivers schools and first year races and find a 240 tub and transfer parts to the 240?

Any help with car set up would also be a great help.

    Terry,
The first step is to identify the class you want to get back to racing in.
Not sure what class you could run a hybrid 280/240z that would not be a "catch all" class such as NASA Super Unlimited.
For SCCA classes that you can run the 280 and 240, such as ITS, the 240 is generally considered to be the faster car. The 280 does not make enough additional HP required to offset the additional weight you are required to run. And worse yet, has the same (weak) brake setup to go with that extra weight.
A good plan would be to spend a year in the NASA HPDE school system with the hybrid 240/280 setup. Then build up a 240 tub and come join us in the SCCA ITS class. We need more 'Zs to help keep those pesky RX-7s under control....:-)

Terry, your hybrid Z could run in ITE now. If you want seat time, try the TH Street Schools.

And like what Todd said, the 240 is a better choice than the 280.

The Region's ITE rules are at

Thanks for the information. I Live in Salem, Oregon and will be running in the Portland, Seattle tracks. Would love to come down to T.Hill and always wanted learn Sears Point. Any other info on parts ie brake drums etc... and setting up suspension would also be a great help.

Hope to see you Z car guys this next year.

    Oregon region ITE rules

    http://www.oregonscca.com/roadrace/2003/ITE_rules.pdf

A little more complex than the SFR rules, but there is no clause for back-dating / up-dating.

It also looks like you could run RS, but would have to add 200 lbs since the Z only came with 2 seats.

    NorthWest Region ITE rules:

    Hi, Terry!

I started racing a 240 this year, and if you look at some of the old threads in the Nissan Racecars forum, you'll see some of the advice I got, including suspension setup on the Z.

The on-line sources recommended to me, particularly for parts resources, are listed on my site at: http://www.webtracy.com/Links.html

(Sorry, I don't have a bit of help to offer on the 280, but many of the suppliers are the same.)

There are also links to organizations that run track days at Sears, Laguna, and Thunderhill.

    Good luck!
    - Tracy
