    Default Porsche 944S

    Nobody has mentioned the 944S in a while. Did anyone ever build one?? Im curious because I raced a 944 few years back and did quite well. THought the S would be a killer ITS car. Stock motor 188hp, brembo brakes etc...any thoughts

    I know of a couple being built at least. I've heard very strong rumor that Jon Milledge is working on one.

    George, do you know the min weight for the 944s, Can you also confirm the front brakes are the large double piston Brembo?? Thanks.

    I don't have the specs handy. They came out this year in Fastrack. You might want to check the Fastracks on the SCCA web site.

    There was one at the last race of the year at VIR. I'll try to dig up the results. Black I think, nice looking/sounding car.

    I have the Black S from VIR....the car ran great...right up until a SRF just had to get by me at the end of qualifying for the enduro and punched me out for the weekend. Besides that, development is coming along nicely....We've learned alot over the last few months about how to get the car fast...I've already knocked 5 - 8 seconds off all my times vs. a N/A 944. I'll be back up at VIR in March, then Daytona in May. Currently doing PBOC & PCA in Sebring this and next month.

    Funny you should mention Speedsource...with the S I can finally run down the straights without having the RX-7's pass me, but then there's the Seedsource RX-7....Flying down the long straight at VIR after Oak Tree turn when....bump....bump....Speedsource filled the rear view mirror...we bumped drafted for while..then he flew by.....he's spent way more $ than me....
    As far a Sebring....down to a 2:40, still have more sorting to do....

    Mark, have you done anything to your S motor?? Balanced, headwork etc. If the Speedsource cars are "blowing" by you, this is not a good sign.

    There's hope....I'm still in early development. The motor is put together very well....balanced. I haven't gotten to the head yet...we were trying to make a race and just seated the valves and installed . I still plan to port match and deck it within limitations. The big item we found is that no one makes a 'racing' header for the 'S'. We took a 928 S4 header, chopped it up, welded it back and immediately took 4-5 seconds off at Daytona...big difference. I'm working with someone now to take our mule and make a header. After that, we can get it on the dyno and look to do some chip work as allowed. This should give us some major HP, then the RX7's should be more manageable. From what I've heard, the Speedsource RX 7's have huge $'s plus several years in development but I think there's is lots of HP there to find.

    A fresh IT-spec SpeedSource motor will cost you less than a Spec Miata motor from Sunbelt. Figure around $4000. Not bad compared to other platforms.

    I had heard much larger numbers....Speed Source RX7's in Florida ( I'm told ) are $30,000 +....For this car (944S) I did what we all know not to do...don't Build a race car...let someone else and buy it from them...but since the 'S' is new, not much choice. Sebring PCA is in three weeks, I should have the new header on by then so we'll see what that does.

    I am talking just for a motor, not a complete build from SpeedSource. The cars that come out of there are concourse quality. I was trying to illustrate how inexpensive it is to make power in an RX-7.

    That's a given.....I'm deep into this now with the intent to see what I can get out of a 16 valve...Hopefully by Daytona in May I'll have everything sorted.

    Speaking of Sebring, a NON SpeedSource RX7 went 2:32.7 in January. This was on the new Hoosiers-(and before he was "taken out" of the weekend) That is still flying, either way. I think the 944S still has some potential though.
