Default FC3s mazda exhaust ports, question

I am building my first road race car. Tired of Spec Miata (sold!)

I have been told by my engine builder that this thing in the exhaust port is part of the "smog system" and can legally be removed.
I know that Mazdatrix in Cali says not to remove, buy my guy says I need to spend the money to remove it, and it is illegal to use the Turbo housings. It sounds legit to me.
    Opinions??

If that pic doesn't show up, click here:

If that doesn't work, cut and paste this into your browser window.

The baffle is there for noise reduction. There are two ways to remove it. One is to cut it out which is going to be considered porting and will be illegal. The other is to pull the roll pins that hold it in and swap it with sleeve out of a turbo housing. This is also illegal because the turbo parts aren't included on the spec line. In reality the baffle isn't costing you enough HP to worry about.

Removing that part not even remotely legal, assuming all cars on that spec line came with it. I'd be curious who this guy builds engines for, and what else he thinks is part of the 'smog' system.

We always removed that on the car as it was called an exaust silencer and exaust is free. It was found illegal on appeal and we had to put them back. Makes little or no difference in power.

don't do it it's illegal to remove.also if you do it anyway the sound of the engine change and any good engine builder would hear the difference.did someone say protest.?? not worth it.i have heard guys using the turbo housing and swapping the sleeves another no no.different part number .as you model line.

Using the "exhaust is free" argument to apply to the silencer - which is clearly contained in the exhaust port, and inside the housing - is tantamount to saying exhaust valves and all head porting should be free, by the same logic. That's why it's illegal. The intent is that any exhaust system downstream of the head, or rotor housing, is free.

I've got a sleeve that needs replacing (sagging ears), but I can't figure out how to pull the roll pins. Looks like they're in blind holes to me.

    Thanks,

You get a sheet metal screw, run it in the roll pin, and use a slide hammer on that to pull them out.

Boy, you make it sound easy - but you got me on the right track. 1 1/2 hours for the 1st pin, 1 for the second, 10 minutes for the third, 5 for the fourth.

    Thanks,

Marty, can you get a pic of the one that sagged? I've never seen that.

Sure send em over. But I don't drink beer so it'll cost you one pizza slice per housing.
