Door gutting clarification

Ok, since I've decided to give it up on the driver's window finally, I need to re-do my cage a bit and "gut" the door.

But I want to make sure I'm legal. Yes, I've read the rulebook. The question that I have is, what does 'modify' mean in regards to the inner door support? I would take it to mean that I can cut the heck out of that inner door metal as long as there's a slim border around the edges so that it's not totally removed. Right?
