3642 Happens to all of us.
I put a flat bottom paper coffee filter in the drain basket to catch the big chunks.
My GMC van, which has a mix of metric and SAE, uses 18 mm on the idler pulley bolt.
Barry,
Really? I'd love to find out more history, but you got to find your car first. They even look alike now. Mine was registered to Edward Tinsley at one time and got "rebodied" in '94.
Barry,
I posted this on the Production Car site for you.

What kind of pistons are they? Can you get +.040 1.6 pistons?
Thanks for everyone's insight.
Sheesh, you'd think after after making pick ups with rear drum brakes for, what(?), 80 years(?), GM could figure it out.
Right now I have the perfect tow vehicle...
Scirocco on an open trailer with brakes, say 3,000# plus race junk. Problem is I don't want to drive a full size p/u or SUV every day.
I'm thinking about tow vehicles that I can stand as a daily driver. The 5 cylinder Chev/GMC Colorado/Canyon look promising. Has anyone had experience towing with them?
Just to follow up, I replaced the backing plates/e brakes/drums and everything works well now.

I'll put something on my Scirocco blog.

I just ordered some 19.7mm/.775" front pads from Carbotech. They are still making them in different compounds. We'll see how that works.
They were not cheap but nice guys to deal with.
...
Mike, thanks for the info, that's just what I was looking for.
I use one from fuelports on the fuel distributor of my Scirocco. I keep the sample hose tie wrapped to the cage inside the car. If you want, I can send you a photo of the installation.
Thanks Sandro. I saw those, but I think that the bore is too big for my 1.6.
Has anyone found one brand of head gaskets to be thinner than others?
I have a Brazilian one made Sabo that measures .075 new.
It's not a 1.6 head.
Thanks Lael!
Looks like I'll be digging the 1.7 core out from the back of the garage.
Would a 1.7 engine (with 1.6 cast into the head) have come with triple groove valve keepers?
Thanks for the offer Bill. I made an adapter for my C compressor, popped one off and found out what I needed to know.
rebuilding may not be worth your effort. I got a rebuilt rack for the Scirocco fairly cheap.
Thanks everyone for the advice. I think that I can make an adapter kind of like this:

I need a valve spring compressor for a VW 8 valve head. I have a Hastings "C" clamp style one, can I get an adapter for OHC springs? Or should I just buy a cheap new one on ebay?
Remember, the side G forces in drag racing are usually nil. Those seats have little to hold your upper body/shoulders in place. The cheapest Kirkey seat would be better for road racing.
