i don't know what class you are running in but, the late model gasket you're talking about is not the same thickness as the 88-91 gasket. honda does make a steel gasket for the 88-91 it's 4 layers...

in your picture it didn't look like the shock was resting on the taper yet, if it's still the same you should gain that distance. then i would remove the spring jack it up and look at what bottoms...
