I thought at one time anyone racing on a novice permit had to have an "X" next to their car number. I have looked through the GCR and cannot find this. Am I missing it or just wrong???

I think that there used to be a rule like that (or an orange panel?) but it's gone away...

I'm pretty sure that you have to run 'rookie stripes' (three vertical stripes, on each side, and the rear of the car) for any races you run until your novice book has been signed off (at which time, it essentially becomes a Regional license).

I don't believe there is such a rule. I think it is up to each Region to decide that stuff. Stripes, Big 'X', etc.

During year 2000 wich was my first year I ran the entire year with a large yellow "X" next to each number & a yellow strip of yellow across the rear bumper. In the CenDiv at that time X's were required while using the Novice permit.

No "rookie stripes", Xs, or anything else is required on a novice driver's car. Never has been, unless it was prior to the early-80's. Any such requirements were Regional or Divisional, not national.
However, I think it's a great idea, for two reasons:
- One, I'd like to know who's a novice so experienced guys like me can give them plenty of room and not try any serious moves on them,
- Two, I'd like to run rookie stripes on my own car all the time, because of reason number one... http://Forum.ImprovedTouring.com/it/wink.gif
San Francisco Region Supps, require a "N" on the side of the car, and an Orange placard on the rear of the car, so when your passing him/her, you know to give them a little bit more "room"

At the SEDiv races I've attended or run, (ATL, CCR, and Buccaneer regions) Novice holders (I am one) run with an X on the rear of the car, usually the bumper.
I like it. I might run them forever. :-)

Thinking about it from a course marshal's perspective, it might be reasonable to put markers on every side of the car. Newbie drivers might need more or more specific communication from the course marshals in an incident, too.

I like the idea of having an "N" or an "R" for rookie for newbie racers.

There has never been a rule requiring an "x". Some driver's school use the designation to differenciate the novices from those drivers that already have a license.
