Kind of missed on the 240Z decline part, but the emergence of the ERM 300ZX and SpeedSource Mazdas sure made it look like it at the time. Once Reckert retired from driving, his crewchief, Keith Thomas, switched over to this Wittel guy and they extended the run of the 240Z for a good long time.
