My car has a welded cage, but it bolts to the floor. There are currently small plates welded to the tubes for this. I want to add the larger plates so that my cage can tie in to the inner rockers for a more safe structure. Do I have to remove the existing plates that are welded to the tubes or can I simply weld those plates to the plates I plan to install?

Weld plates adjacent to it, for a maximum of 100 sq-in total.
There's no requirement that these plates be one solid plate. If you're worried about it, grind down the welds and paint it so they look contiguous. - GA

No problem welding the small pad to the bigger (safer) plate!

Dave,
Did you ever see the plates for the rear stays of my old Rabbit? They were multi-piece. I agree w/ these guys, just weld the bigger plate under the old plate.

Thanks for the comments, guys. I will add plates this winter when I add my pass. side door bar.
Bill, I remember looking at your car but the details have long since escaped this old tired brain.
