4.25 FD for an 020 gearbox?

I thought that I had a line on an affordable final drive for my MkIII (CHE or DFQ gearbox code) but it didn't pan out. Anyone have any leads?

The 4.25 came stock on '91-92 Jetta Turbo Diesels, if you happen to have one rotting in your back yard...

Interesting you post this today. I just had my salvage guy run a search for this trans today. He came back with very few in the states and they were almost twice what a new r&p would cost. He did find though that our neighbors to the north (Canada) seem to have quite a few. Although their prices were no better.

I think it's actually a 4.23:1, and it came in what was known as an eco-disel. I used to know the tranny code off the top of my head, but I forget (AGB?). I looked and looked for one a couple of years ago when I was running my ITB Rabbit GTI. Found one used box, and the guy wanted $500 for it. At the time, I had a line on a new one from the dealer for ~$350. I ended up buying a VWMS one from someone out in the midwest.

You might want to price a VW dealer,last time we looked they were not a lot of $.
The 4.24 only came in US spec eco-diesel
91-92 if the old memory is correct.

I bought mine from a dealer this year for the A3

...but my most current information suggests that the input shafts are different on those earlier 020 'boxes, than they are on the MkIII DFQ/CHE - including the AVX.

Does that PN of yours actually bolt straight in, Dave?

Are you only looking for a ring and pinion or the input shaft. I have ETKA here at the house if you need specific information. If you are just after the 020 final drive then any 4.25 (68:16)(5 speed) will work.

The R&P is in the trans now. The builder didn't indicate any trouble.

The part # is just for the R&P.

My brother has that R&P and doesn't need it..email me for his contact info (grmper at aol dot com)
if you don't have it.

I checked with one of our VW dealers here in Phoenix and they wanted $500.00 (ouch).

There is a place in Oregon that has them at a more reasonable price, call overland parts in calif and they will give you the number, or let me know and I will get the number for you.

I went back and re-did our gear charts, on the data from the VIR enduro (DL-1 ROCKS), and I've decided to go with the more conservative 3.94 FD. That decision wasn't hurt by the fact that we found one in a gearbox, in a dead Golf diesel in the parking lot at der Wagen Haus here in Greensboro, NC - official race shoppe of Team GTI.

In Oregon there is a shop called German Transaxle, their site is on the web with their number, I called them today and they have a 4.25 for $225.00 brand spankin new, if you need the 4th gear for the double snap ring it will be another $50.00. Right in 16VRacers backyard.

Overland has them new for $295.00.

I told you those things were expensive. I don't know why, but they are. I guess because they're so scarce.

This Jetta isn't particularly expensive - it's just that (a) the woman who owns it doesn't understand that it's a total POS, and (B) she doesn't have a title for it. It has nothing to do with scarcity in her case: She doesn't even know what a final drive ratio is.

To give you an idea, I offered her more for JUST the gearbox than I was willing to give her for the entire car! I was afraid to stick my head in it to check how many miles it has.

The 3.94 came out of an AGS code 'box, in our case - '85-86 Golf NA Diesel.
