Torsen Durability?
I'm about ready for a fresh rear gear and had been planning on using a Torsen (got a used Miata unit sitting in the garage), but lately I've been hearing reports that they're not durable. Anybody have any real info on how long these things last? A source I believe to be reliable says don't expect more than 2 years.
Thanks,

What would the reason for them not being durable? The clutch type units are the ones that wear out...

The torsen is a great unit if your suspension is soft enough in the rear to not lift the inside tire. They use a mis-match of spur type gears to resist turning of the side gears and these do wear over time. If you pop the curbs much they can send you for a ride.

Story was that they break. Don't know exactly where/how.

I believe an unmodded Quaife is guaranteed, even with racing abuse.
You could always check Torsen for what they give on a Guaranty. I think the name may be "Torsen-Gleason" (or some variation) and they are located in Rochester, NY.
Very nice folks there. Try and get a hold of Rick Barnes there for details.
Cheers.

Gear-type torque biasing diffs are generally considered to be very durable and, in the kind of cars we deal with, reliable.

As a side note, the inventor of the Torsen diff Vernon "Gleasman" just passed away at age 92. More info about him and his company Torvec Inc. at http://www.fourtitude.com/news/publish/Ind...inter_910.shtml

www.torsen.com now owned by Toyoda-Koki Automotive. I sent them an email inquiry with my questions over the weekend - no reply. I've decided to use the torsen.
